FAP levels and certifications

What does FAP mean?

FAP stands for Fingerprint Acquisition Profile, a set of FBI requirements for fingerprint scanners that defines the capture area, the number of fingers captured at once and the image quality. Read the full FAP guide.

What is the difference between FAP20, FAP30, FAP45, FAP50 and FAP60?

FAP20 and FAP30 capture one finger on a compact sensor and follow PIV-071006. FAP45 captures one to two fingers, FAP50 up to four fingers on a larger area, and FAP60 up to four fingers or the full palm, all under the stricter Appendix F image quality rules.

PIV-071006 or Appendix F: which do I need?

PIV-071006 suits one-to-one verification such as access control, KYC and quick field checks. Appendix F is the standard to look for when prints are searched one-to-many against large databases such as AFIS, for enrollment and investigations.

Are GripID fingerprint devices FBI certified?

The FAP30 IB (PIV-071006), the FAP45 IB and the FAP50 IB (Appendix F) are FBI certified. The certification of the other GripID devices is in progress. Each product page lists the exact certification.

What is liveness detection (PAD)?

Presentation Attack Detection checks that a finger is alive and not a replica made of silicone, rubber or film. It is tested under ISO/IEC 30107-3 at Level 1 or Level 2, and GripID devices offer PAD Level 1 or Level 2 depending on the model.

What are MINEX III and MOSIP?

MINEX III is a NIST evaluation of fingerprint template interoperability, so templates work across AFIS and identity systems. MOSIP is an open-source platform for national digital identity, and the GripID FAP30, FAP45 and FAP50 devices are compatible with it.
